These bolts are made of Type 1 high-carbon alloy steel or Type 3 weathering steel for high tensile strength. While A-490 structural bolts can’t be galvanized due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, they are stronger than Grade A325. Type 3 weathering steel is meant to weather and rust as it ages, which acts as a protective coating to seal the A-490 structural bolt.
